Nigel Farage is facing an investigation by the parliamentary standards commissioner over a £5m gift he received from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne before entering Parliament, according to reports.
The Reform UK leader was referred to the parliamentary watchdog after acknowledging he received the money from Harborne in 2024. Harborne, a British businessman based in Thailand, has also been a major financial supporter of Reform UK and its predecessor, the Brexit Party.
Farage has consistently maintained there is “no case to answer”, arguing the payment was a personal gift unrelated to politics and intended to fund private security measures.
He previously said the money “was given to me so that I would be safe and secure for the rest of my life”.
> “I have tried and failed in the past to get security funded by the Home Office, and I don’t think the state will ever help me,” Farage added. > > “I’m very much on my own and will be for the rest of my life, and I have to face up to that grim reality. > > “Christopher is an ardent supporter who is deeply concerned for my safety.”
The payment was reportedly made before Farage confirmed he would stand in Clacton during the 2024 general election campaign.
If the parliamentary investigation concludes that Farage committed a serious breach of Commons rules, he could face suspension from the House of Commons. A suspension of 10 days or more could potentially trigger a recall petition, forcing a by-election in his Clacton constituency.
A spokesperson for Reform UK said:
> “Mr Farage’s office is in communications with the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards. He has always been clear that this was a personal, unconditional gift and no rules were broken. > > “We look forward to this being put to bed once and for all.”
Harborne has separately donated millions to Reform UK, including a reported £9m contribution in August 2025, believed to be the largest single political donation made by a living individual in UK political history.
Reform deputy leader Richard Tice defended the payment earlier this week, describing the £5m as “a personal gift based around safety and security”, adding that it was “probably not enough” to keep Farage safe.
