Bitcoin Slides as Reported $6.3bn Binance Breach Shakes Market Confidence

Bitcoin fell sharply on Friday as a reported $6.3bn security breach at Binance put the resilience of cryptocurrency exchanges back under scrutiny.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency dropped 4.1% to $77,445.96, while Ether declined 4.4% to $2,229.50. Binance’s own token, BNB, suffered a steeper fall, losing 6% to trade at $701.18.

According to the supplied report, Binance said approximately $3bn in assets had been frozen following the incident and committed to covering all losses. The reported theft would be the largest recorded in the cryptocurrency sector.

The exchange said its preliminary investigation suggested “the security incident may involve a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which allowed an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.”

Binance co-founder Yi He said deposits continued to operate normally. The exchange was strengthening its withdrawal service and address controls, with withdrawals expected to begin resuming within 48 hours of the announcement.

The market reaction highlights how quickly a security failure at one major exchange can undermine confidence across digital assets. Recovering funds is only part of the challenge: Binance must also explain how the breach occurred and demonstrate that the weaknesses have been addressed.
